A Special Story • A Special Cherry

The Toftness family had been farming cherries in Wenatchee, Washington State, for more than a decade when they suffered the unimaginable loss of their infant daughter, Skylar Rae. Around this time, while working in the family orchard on a day filled with patchy rain and sunshine, Skylar Rae’s grandpa looked up to the sky and saw a beautiful rainbow come down over the hill. Weaving through the orchard, he tried to follow the rainbow to its end and on this journey he stumbled upon a cherry tree that was different than any other tree in his orchard. Nestled in between the rows of ripe, red Sweetheart cherries, and glowing yellow Rainier cherries, was a tree that bore fruit that simply glowed on the tree.

A Chance Discovery

Typically, cherries found in nature are quite difficult to cultivate for commercial production. But this was not a typical cherry. Because it was so special, the family felt it was a gift from nature meant to honor their beautiful daughter. They named the colorful, unique, and deliciously sweet fruit after their daughter, and Skylar Rae cherries were born.
